"No now really knows why they are alive until they know what they'd die for" --Martin Luther King, Jr. On Monday, January 19, 2015 we celebrated the life of this great man. The only non-president with a national holiday in his honor. The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and the Brooklyn Borough President has held the 29 year tradition of bringing Brooklyn and neighboring cities together to celebrate the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, the guest speaker was one of my all-time favorite teachers: the prominent intellectual, Dr. Cornel West! Dr. West expressed (as only he can) that every year MLK Day "Santa Clausifies" Dr. King. West said if Dr. King were to comment on today, he would exclaim: "What a land of spiritual malnutrition and moral constipation!" Dr. Cornel West's message reminded us of how Dr. King lived, the origin of his fight and energized us for how far we still have left to go. Thanks for the invite, Dad! I had a great time!
